The BlingSwitcher applet is designed to replace the workspace switcher applet for the gnome dock. It provides a screenshot of each available desktop along with outlines of each open window. It is a full replacement of the current workspace switcher applet for the gnome bar. Check out the video to see it in action. Also based on my experiences with this applet, it is completely stable. It can be found in the Awn-Extras branch.
